WNYC Podcast Mixtape: Cindy Gallop on Future of Sex

Join Future of Sex host Bryony Cole and Make Love Not Porn Founder Cindy Gallop for a live conversation on sex, tech, and consent in 2018.

Revenge porn, sexting, cyber-flashing, blockchain and social sex are some of the modern ways sexuality is being shaped by technology. Today, sexual harassment and abuse are perpetrated as commonly in real life as they are through the internet. While sexual harassment is a problem that has preceded and been molded by technology, Cole and Gallop explore whether or not technology can be a solution, rather than a part of the problem. They ask questions like, Is there a future where consent-affirming tools are built into platforms like Snapchat? Is the future of sex more promising because of technological advancements, or is it worse?

Tickets are $15.

Mindful Sex for Couples: How to Get Out of Your Head & Enjoy The Moment

Mindful Sex for Couples: How to Get Out of Your Head & Enjoy The Moment

Do you or your partner get distracted easily during sex? Maybe you start totally present, enjoying every sensation – until your mind wanders to tomorrow’s to-do list, how you look, and that fight you had with your boss/sibling/BFF. Maybe you have to work really hard to get back into the moment when your mind wanders – and sometimes you just can’t. Maybe you struggle to even get in the mood because your brain won’t shut the eff up.

When your approach sex from only your head, you can’t fully enjoy the experience.

As soon as your mind wanders, you stop feeling sexy & relaxed. You judge yourself, your partner, even the sex. Sensations feel dulled. It’s as if your body pulls your arousal back inside.

You wish that you could…

  • stay more present during sex

  • quickly return to enjoying yourself after getting distracted

  • let go of judgment and shame towards yourself, your partner(s), and your sex life

The key to getting out of your own way is to practice self-awareness and acceptance.

Join us to learn how to enjoy more intimate, exciting, and fulfilling sex by being fully present and in the moment, with compassion towards yourself and partner. This experiential workshop will integrate mindfulness and intimacy techniques.

In this welcoming, zero-judgment-and-BS space, you’ll learn to…

  • Be in the moment, not in your head

  • Calm your mind and body

  • Release judgment and shame around intimacy

  • Develop more compassion for yourself, your partner(s) and your relationship(s)

VIBRATOR NATION: HOW FEMINIST SEX-TOY STORES CHANGED THE BUSINESS OF PLEASURE

VIBRATOR NATION: HOW FEMINIST SEX-TOY STORES CHANGED THE BUSINESS OF PLEASURE

In the 1970s a group of feminist entrepreneurs pioneered a movement by reimagining the sex shop industry. They questioned who sex shops benefited, what type of customer visited them, what potential could they acheive, and through their brainstorming and research created companies such as Eve’s Garden, Good Vibrations, and Babeland. These weren't mere commercial enterprises, but places of education and providers of community resources. They changed how sex was discussed, how it was had, and even how it was enjoyed.

In Vibrator Nation Lynn Comella shares how these sex-positive retailers raised sexual consciousness and doubled as social activists, having redefined the adult industry and changed the lives of women everywhere.

Join us in the Rare Book Room as Lynn Comella sits down with Julie Scelfo, author of Women Who Made New York, to discuss this all important industry and outlook.

Presented in partnership with Babeland and with NYU's Center for Study of Gender and Sexuality.

Lynn Comella, Ph.D. is an associate professor of gender and sexuality studies in the department of interdisciplinary, gender, and ethnic studies at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. An expert on the adult entertainment industry, her research explores a number of broad sociological themes, including the relationship between sexual politics and consumer culture. Her work on the history of the women’s market for sex toys and pornography has been published in the International Journal of CommunicationPorn StudiesFeminist Media StudiesThe Feminist Porn BookCommodity ActivismSex for Sale, and New Sociologies of Sex Work, among other venues. She has also published more than 50 articles about sex and culture in local and national media outlets, including Bitch magazine and Pacific Standard.

Julie Scelfo is a former staff writer/current contributor to The New York Times, where her stories about society and human behavior reframe popular ideas and ask us to rethink our basic assumptions. She has written about transgender pronouns; the intersection of campus suicides with social media and perfectionism; the human health risks from synthetic chemicals in consumer products; homelessness; and how the collapse of Lehman Brothers led to “trickle-down home economics”—thousands of domestics and other low-wage laborers losing their jobs.

Australia's First Sextech Hackathon
Mar
23
to Mar 25

Australia's First Sextech Hackathon

  • Academy Xi Sydney (CBD) (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Australia's first Sextech Hackathon is here.

In the next few decades, our sex lives will undergo incredible change. The roles of apps, websites, robots and VR will continue to expand at the intersection of technology and sexuality, presenting possibilities that are infinite, awe-inspiring and unknown. A diverse range of voices and ideas are urgently needed to find new and innovative ways to use technology to deliver sex education, products and services for sexual health and wellness, assault reporting and dating. As an industry, 'sextech' is already estimated to be worth A$20B and is set to become one of the fastest growing multi-billion dollar industries in the next few years. If you have an idea or want to be involved in an amazing project that can make a difference in people's lives, join us for this ground-breaking hackathon.

What Is Sextech?

Most simply, sextech is any technology designed with the intention of enhancing human sexuality and human sexual experience. Solutions may cover any of the areas associated with sexual experience from sexual health and wellbeing, to personal safety, choice of sexual experiences, personal dignity in sex, games, entertainment and dating experiences.

Why Should You Care?

Innovations in sextech will allow us to experience, express, and understand our sexualities in ways we never thought possible. The key value of sextech products and services is that they are designed around relationships, bringing new ideas of intimacy, pleasure and desire to the human experience. While there is plenty of potential in this space, it is largely untapped. We believe that women-identified technologies and thinkers can influence the direction of this market, while also changing the cultural conversation and attitudes toward female sexuality. This event is designed to be open to all, but our ambition is for women's voices to be contributing elements to all projects arising from our event.

The Sextech Hackathon. What’s That?

A weekend-long hackathon in which all members will collaborate intensively on creating sextech products. Unlike other hackathons that may require some coding expertise, we are open to all skills and experience levels. Gathering together in teams, you will innovate, and depending on the expertise of the team, generate a working prototype, whether this is a technology product, a design or a campaign.

Who Can Participate?

We welcome people of all job descriptions, whether you’re a designer, developer, marketer, entrepreneur, project manager, therapist or sexologist. Diverse groups often work incredibly well together to produce the best results. In particular, we are focused on making space for, and elevating the voices and perspectives of, women-identified people, although we support inclusion of all genders and sexualities.

Program Format & Schedule

Kicking off on Friday evening March 23 with talks from inspiring mentors. We will form teams according to categories of interests and problem statements. Following the team forming on Friday night, the remainder of the weekend will be spent working together to bring a project to life, and finish on Sunday with a Shark Tank-style pitch to a panel of judges.

Schedule:

March 23 (evening) - Sextech Talks and Team Formation.

March 24 (day) - Hack day, work as teams, receiving expert mentoring from industry leaders.

March 25 (day) - Hack day and pitching. Afterparty!

Categories to work on at the Sextech hackathon:

  • Health
  • Education
  • Pleasure
  • Consent

AI, Blockchain and the New Matriarchy

AI, Blockchain and the New Matriarchy

Right now, one could argue that one of the fastest-growing and most potent forces in the world is technology. The only other force as ubiquitous as tech is the rise of feminine consciousness--the emergence of women onto the public stage and into leadership roles across all industries. Very few are remarking on these parallel forces and how they might merge to form what can be termed "Matriarchal Tech and/or Benevolent Tech."

That is why blockchain technology is such a fascinating emergence because much of what it promises is similar to a matriarchal/feminine approach in decentralization of power and more equitable distribution of resources. There is much yet to be discovered and created. Women currently comprise a tiny percentage of blockchain and cryptocurrency users. The world of tech is still largely steered by men, without the input and guidance of emerging feminine principles. It's time to wed these seemingly polar opposite realms and see what fruitful creations can result, for the benefit of all.

This is more than a talking head event, it will also be a "talking body" experience. We will explore the nature of our bonding with technology, our notions of value, and how we can direct new developments in a benevolent direction. We'll also take a look at ancient and contemporary matriarchies & egalitarian societies, how they handled finances & resources, and how power can be harmoniously shared and brokered between men and women.

Panelists:
Dr. Francesca Ferrando, NYU Philosophy professor, expert on transhumanism
Alex Gordon-Brander, CTO, Omega One, blockchain-based trading platform

Bulletin Presents: An Inclusive Panel on Love & Sex

We were fed up with the heteronormative, commercialized vibez of Valentine's Day. The constant messaging that success is synonymous with coupling off. That love is money. That money is love. For most, that's just not what pleasure is about.

So we threw together a panel of badass womxn who, like us, want you to find your own pleasure, indulgence and sexual fulfillment this February. Join us as we bring six of our favorite outspoken voices together to ask, "What is pleasure?" And what makes YOU feel seriously sexy? We're honored to host Arielle Egozi, intersectional feminism and sex positivity influencer, as our conversation leader and event moderator for the night. We welcome Vera Papisova, Mama Cax, Mariella Mosthof, Serena Daniari, Mia Davis and Emily Varnam to the stage. Learn more about our incredible panelists below.

Come hang with us on February 15 for our inclusive panel on self-love and sex. We'll have wine (as always), snacks and a few ~indulgent~ items from the store thanks to our faves at Dame, Unbound, bitxbrown, 41 Winks and Baby Face Press. See you there!

Mindful Sex: How to Get Out of Your Head & Enjoy The Moment

Mindful Sex: How to Get Out of Your Head & Enjoy The Moment

Do you get distracted easily during sex?

Facilitated by KAIT SCALISI and TANYA VALLE. Get your tickets here.
