NUANCE 2018

  • 849 6th Avenue New York, NY, 10001 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

NUANCE is a full day conference highlighting a series of guided, dynamic and complicated conversations. It will be hosted at the beautiful and intimate SECOND and led by leaders in various professions surrounding sexuality & pleasure, gender, consent, online discourse, and more. We believe that just because a space is safe, doesn’t mean it can’t be challenging — and our goal is to create an atmosphere that encourages and supports thoughtful conversations between people from various walks of life.

Please join us this summer for NUANCE — the first full-day interactive conference of it's kind produced by Dame Products.

We can probably all agree that lately, it's been difficult to have certain complicated conversations. Whether that's out of the fear that we'll say the wrong thing, that we'll be shamed for our opinions, or that we really "don't know enough" to comment — having respectful conversations about heated topics is more difficult than ever.

While we know the answer to most questions is nuanced, and that there's often no real "right" or "wrong" solution, oftentimes it seems like the only "right" answer is black or white. We feel this attitude has further divided already disparate communities and exacerbated misunderstandings that could be solved via open and honest communication. Conversely, just because a space is "safe" doesn't mean it can't be challenging.

On July 21st, join us for a day of collectively rolling up our sleeves and sharing opinions with thought leaders on the topics of sex, gender, shame, and consent. From Keynote presentations by sex educators Ericka Hart and Eileen Kelly, to town halls on The Nuance of Shame in the Digital Age and The Nuance of Gender & Intimate Consent spearheaded by the likes of influencers and activists like Aminatou Sow (Call Your Girlfriend), Sawyer DeVuyst (trans model, actor, and activist), Shelby Sells (feminist porn maker), Zachariah Reitano (CEO of Roman), Bryan Stacey (CEO of Biem), Arielle Egozi (sex and gender writer), and more, to workshops on Envisioning Your Dream Sex Life with MacKenzie Peck (Founder of Math Magazine) and Movement & Consent with Ash Spivak from Cycles + Sex — we'll hold space from 10am-6pm for complicated and yes, nuanced, conversations, learn from each other's implicit biases and blindspots, and hopefully bridge gaps in understanding.

In addition to a full day of programming, we'll have an all-day Marketplace for you to shop for Dame Products & likeminded brands — including Haute ChocolateBabelandSustainCute Fruit UndiesYew Yew Shop and Math Magazine.

Your ticket also includes lunch and an open bar happy hour after the final keynote.

We hope you'll join us for a perspective-shifting day of growth, compassion, and deep conversation!

New York Sextech Hackathon
Aug

to Aug 26

New York Sextech Hackathon

  • 336 Flatbush Avenue Brooklyn, NY, 11238 United States (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Future of Sex's sextech hackathon has been to Australia, to Asia and in August it's coming to New York.

What's a sextech hackathon?

A weekend-long hackathon in which all members will collaborate intensively on creating sextech products. Unlike other hackathons that may require some coding expertise, we are open to all skills and experience levels. Gathering together in teams, you will innovate, and depending on the expertise of the team, generate a working prototype, whether this is a technology product, a design or a campaign.

Who Can Participate?

We welcome people of all job descriptions, whether you’re a designer, developer, marketer, entrepreneur, project manager, therapist or sexologist. Diverse groups often work incredibly well together to produce the best results.

In particular, we are focused on making space for, and elevating the voices and perspectives of, women-identified people, although we support inclusion of all genders and sexualities.

In the next few decades, our sex lives will undergo incredible change.

The roles of apps, websites, robots and VR will continue to expand at the intersection of technology and sexuality, presenting possibilities that are infinite, awe-inspiring and unknown.

A diverse range of voices and ideas are urgently needed to find new and innovative ways to use technology to deliver sex education, products and services for sexual health and wellness, assault reporting and dating.

As an industry, 'sextech' is already estimated to be worth A$20B and is set to become one of the fastest growing multi-billion dollar industries in the next few years.

If you have an idea or want to be involved in an amazing project that can make a difference in people's lives, join us for this ground-breaking hackathon.

What Is Sextech?

Most simply, sextech is any technology designed with the intention of enhancing human sexuality and human sexual experience.

Solutions may cover any of the areas associated with sexual experience from sexual health and wellbeing, to personal safety, choice of sexual experiences, personal dignity in sex, games, entertainment and dating experiences.

Why Should You Care?

Innovations in sextech will allow us to experience, express, and understand our sexualities in ways we never thought possible.

The key value of sextech products and services is that they are designed around relationships, bringing new ideas of intimacy, pleasure and desire to the human experience. While there is plenty of potential in this space, it is largely untapped.

We believe that women-identified technologies and thinkers can influence the direction of this market, while also changing the cultural conversation and attitudes toward female sexuality. This event is designed to be open to all, but our ambition is for women's voices to be contributing elements to all projects arising from our event.

Program Format & Schedule:

Kicking off on Friday evening August 24 with talks from inspiring mentors.

We will form teams according to categories of interests and problem statements.

Following the team forming on Friday night, the remainder of the weekend will be spent working together to bring a project to life, and finish on Sunday with a Shark Tank-style pitch to a panel of judges.

Schedule:

August 24 FRIDAY 7-9pm - Sextech Talks and Team Formation.

August 25 SATURDAY 9am - 4pm - Hack day, work as teams, receiving expert mentoring from industry leaders.

August 26 SUNDAY 9am - 3pm - Hack day and pitching.

Afterparty!

Delivered by Drone? The Future of Sex Toys : Future of Sex Summer Series

Delivered by Drone? The Future of Sex Toys : Future of Sex Summer Series

Americans are spending more money than ever on their sex lives. The sex toy market is sky-rocketing at a rate of $2 billion a year, from $15 billion in 2015 to an estimated $29.7 billion dollar market in 2020. Nearly half of all men and over half of heterosexual women have used a sex toy.

For all the billions we spend today, there has been little public discussion around what sex toys are made of, or where they came from. From toxic materials to harmful design flaws, hygiene issues and unregulated manufacturing practices, most recent reports suggest sex toys are one of the most unregulated industries in the US.

Our reluctance to talk about sex toy consumption is having a dangerous side effect -- products easily purchased can be knockoffs, making them unreliable or downright dangerous. While sex toys are become more socially acceptable and understood as an aid for sexual wellness and health, and companies like Amazon and eBay increase accessibility to toys, what do we need to know to ensure we make the right choice for bodies and pleasure?

What does the sex toy shop of the future look like? Will it be as easy to order a sex toy as it is to order Seamless? How will pleasure products evolve? In a country where less than four years ago, sex toys were still banned in certain states for being obscene, it’s time for an open discussion about the past, present, and future of how these products make their way from retailers to our homes.

Join Future of Sex host Bryony Cole for a conversation on the future of sex shops - a Future of Sex Summer Series podcast recording, with:

Alex Fine, Co-Founder of Dame Products,

Nadine Thompson, president of Bedroom Kandi, boutique party sales,

Hallie Lieberman, Author of Buzz: A Stimulating History of the Sex Toy

Polly Rodriguez, CEO of Unbound

A Walking Tour Through the Clitoris

You are invited to participate in my workshop “A Walking Tour Through the Clitoris” on Tuesday evening, June, 26 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

This in-depth, uninhibited presentation explores the largely unknown depths of women’s extensive pleasure anatomy and describes how each individual part contributes to orgasm, and yeah, multiple orgasms too.  Surprising illustrations reveal the precise anatomical source of female ejaculation and we’ll explore reasons that many women don’t appear to "squirt" or ejaculate.  Can’t find your G Spot?  Hey, you’ve got something better!  Special guest:  the eternal Betty Dodson!

Ya’ll come!  This presentation, limited to 20 women, first come first serve, will be held in a unique location to be announced.  $20 at the door.

Email me at beckychalker@gmail.com to reserve a place and for location asap, or call with questions:  212-722-3536.

Ya’ll come!  Rebecca

The 2nd, greatly enhanced, edition of The Clitoral Truth About Pleasure, Orgasm, Female Ejaculation, The G Spot and Masturbation was published in the spring.

WNYC Podcast Mixtape: Cindy Gallop on Future of Sex

Join Future of Sex host Bryony Cole and Make Love Not Porn Founder Cindy Gallop for a live conversation on sex, tech, and consent in 2018.

Revenge porn, sexting, cyber-flashing, blockchain and social sex are some of the modern ways sexuality is being shaped by technology. Today, sexual harassment and abuse are perpetrated as commonly in real life as they are through the internet. While sexual harassment is a problem that has preceded and been molded by technology, Cole and Gallop explore whether or not technology can be a solution, rather than a part of the problem. They ask questions like, Is there a future where consent-affirming tools are built into platforms like Snapchat? Is the future of sex more promising because of technological advancements, or is it worse?

Tickets are $15.

Mindful Sex for Couples: How to Get Out of Your Head & Enjoy The Moment

Mindful Sex for Couples: How to Get Out of Your Head & Enjoy The Moment

Do you or your partner get distracted easily during sex? Maybe you start totally present, enjoying every sensation – until your mind wanders to tomorrow’s to-do list, how you look, and that fight you had with your boss/sibling/BFF. Maybe you have to work really hard to get back into the moment when your mind wanders – and sometimes you just can’t. Maybe you struggle to even get in the mood because your brain won’t shut the eff up.

When your approach sex from only your head, you can’t fully enjoy the experience.

As soon as your mind wanders, you stop feeling sexy & relaxed. You judge yourself, your partner, even the sex. Sensations feel dulled. It’s as if your body pulls your arousal back inside.

You wish that you could…

  • stay more present during sex

  • quickly return to enjoying yourself after getting distracted

  • let go of judgment and shame towards yourself, your partner(s), and your sex life

The key to getting out of your own way is to practice self-awareness and acceptance.

Join us to learn how to enjoy more intimate, exciting, and fulfilling sex by being fully present and in the moment, with compassion towards yourself and partner. This experiential workshop will integrate mindfulness and intimacy techniques.

In this welcoming, zero-judgment-and-BS space, you’ll learn to…

  • Be in the moment, not in your head

  • Calm your mind and body

  • Release judgment and shame around intimacy

  • Develop more compassion for yourself, your partner(s) and your relationship(s)
